Design Active was founded by David Hemsley in 2018, an experienced design consultant with a long-standing career in the sports and leisure industry.
With a background in building and design, and decades of hands-on experience, David developed a deep understanding of the technical, operational, and strategic requirements needed to successfully deliver sports and leisure facilities. His early work established strong relationships with local authorities, governing bodies, and industry stakeholders, forming the foundation of the practice today.
Over the past 15+ years, Design Active has been involved in a wide range of projects across the UK, from local community facilities to major national developments.
The practice has worked extensively with organisations such as Sport England and DCMS, contributing to funding programmes, design frameworks, and national guidance. This includes involvement in strategic funding rounds, the Sport England Design Framework, and advisory input on inclusive and accessible design standards.
Design Active has played a role in delivering high-profile projects including venues for the Commonwealth Games 2022, such as the Alexander Stadium and Sandwell Aquatics Centre, alongside numerous successful leisure centre developments for local authorities nationwide.
This breadth of experience provides a unique understanding of how to balance client ambitions, funding requirements, and operational needs to deliver successful outcomes.
We believe successful sports and leisure projects are achieved through collaboration, clarity, and a strong understanding of real-world use.
Design Active works closely with clients, operators, and stakeholders to ensure every project:
Many of our projects act as catalysts for local regeneration, supporting wider goals around active lifestyles, public health, and community engagement.
Our approach ensures that challenges are addressed early, opportunities are maximised, and the final outcome is both high-quality and deliverable.
